About Michigan Wolverines
The Michigan Wolverines football team represents the University of Michigan in college football at the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision level. The Wolverines have won 11 national championships, 42 conference championships, and have the most all-time wins in college football history. The team plays its home games at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is the largest stadium in the United States and the second largest stadium in the world. The Wolverines are known for their rich football tradition, passionate fan base, and iconic maize and blue uniforms. The team has produced numerous legendary players and coaches, including Tom Harmon, Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, Bo Schembechler, and Lloyd Carr. The Wolverines have a fierce rivalry with Ohio State University, known as "The Game," which is one of the most storied rivalries in college football. The Michigan Wolverines continue to be a dominant force in college football and are a source of pride for the University of Michigan and its fans.
From 1900 to 1989, Michigan was led by a series of nine head coaches, each of whom has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame either as a coach. The most notable of these coaches was Fielding H. Yost, who served as head coach from 1901 to 1923 and again in 1925. Yost's teams were known for their high-scoring offenses and innovative strategies, leading Michigan to six national championships during his tenure. Other legendary coaches include Fritz Crisler, who introduced the winged helmet design that has become synonymous with Michigan football, and Bo Schembechler, who coached from 1969 to 1989 and led the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten championships and a national championship in 1997. However, the program's fortunes declined under the next two coaches, Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke, who were both fired after relatively short tenures. Following Hoke's dismissal, Michigan hired Jim Harbaugh on December 30, 2014. Harbaugh, a former Michigan quarterback and NFL head coach, has revitalized the program and led the Wolverines to multiple bowl game appearances and a Big Ten championship in 2021. Under Harbaugh's leadership, Michigan has reestablished itself as a national contender and continues to build on its storied football tradition.
